Changing Lives through Education in Uganda

Pre-School in Kanyawara Village

Going to preschool has a positive effect on developing learning abilities and impacting further education.

Children fill a classroom for today's lessons.Preschool programs have been found to be associated with better school achievement, lower rates of grade retention and special education placement, and are likely to have effects on school completion. Some children need special attention in school, and preschool programs may play an important role in preparing them to benefit from formal school settings.

Gathering outside, children engage in fun group activites of music and games. In summary, preschool education has major long term benefits and implications for success in adult life, and has been demonstrated to be cost effective financially and socially.

We support a preschool in Kanyawara village, by paying two teachers' (Margaret and Beatrice's) salary and providing breakfast for more than 50 children. This preschool was set up withhelp of Lynne Isbell (UC Davis) on initiative of Margaret Kabagenyi.

Young child works with his teacher on a blackboard in front of his class. The preschool operates every school day from 8 AM till 12 PM. The age ranges from 3 to 6 years. Since September 2006 (thanks to Anna and Yvonne, from the Netherlands), the preschool has a second room, and the children are divided into 2 age classes.

They have two teachers that follow a well organized program, including reading, writing, calculating, and English.

Children always have time for fun, too! Here is a young child swinging in a tire swing with colorful balloons.Of course, they also play!
Right: Children also have fun playing, as they are here with colorful balloons and a tire swing (click to enlarge).
